In many ways the future os the Newton OS is Einstein, Paul Guyot's Newton Emulator.

Currently there are versions for different ARM-linux devices, as well as Mac OS X. Here's how to set up Einstein running on a Sharp Zaurus SL5500.

To begin:
Hardware needed:
•Sharp Zaurus
•CF card

Software needed:
•Openzaurus(OZ) Bootstrap Rom (check my downloads page)
•The additional ipk packages/libraries listed in the Einsteinmanual(check my downloads page)
•Newton ROM image(pulled from your Newton)
•Einstein platform(available to download from here)

You must flash the ROM of the Zaurus with the proper OpenZaurus ROM. The 'Bootstrap' ROM contains no GUI so it is the proper one to use. The one in my downloads page is from July 2006 so it might not be the most recent. Instructions to flash the Zaurus SL5500 ROM are here.

I had a large enough CF card to contain the Einstein files, the Newton ROM image, the OpenZaurus bootstrap ROM, and additional libraries. So after installing the OZ ROM I installed the ipk files needed. My first attempt to install them all at once didn't work so I installed them one by one. I followed the commands listed in the Einstein User manual to install them.(it's on page 10 of the manual).

Then I launched the script that begins Einstein. And...it worked! I found it to be slow, and not yet up to the speed of my 2100. But it is an exciting beginning.

Also, the flash file created by Einstein Emulator in Mac OS X is compatible with the flash file created by the command line version(arm-Linux). The flash file is saved as "flash" in the command line version and as "internal.flash" in ~/Library/Application Support/Einstein Platform/ for the OSX version. What this means is if you install packages onto the Mac OS X version of Einstein, rename it, then copy that file onto your CF card. Now you can use installed packages on your Zaurus running Einstein.

I plan on updating this page in March 2007, since the emulator expires on February 27, 2007 I am hoping(fingers crossed) that an update will happen then.
